Second Age:

During the early part of the Second Age, Sindarin Elves settle in Lothlorien and Greenwood. Amdir becomes King of Lothlorien and Oropher becomes King of the Woodland Realm in Greenwood.

The Grey Havens are founded on the Gulf of Lune. Cirdan dwells there with many mariners and shipwrights. Gil-galad and Elrond settle in Lindon.

The island realm of Numenor is given to the Men called the Edain who helped the Elves in their struggle against Morgoth. Elrond's brother Elros becomes the first King of Numenor.

The shipyards in Romenna are reopened and Aldarion repairs and expands the harbor.

Erendis accompanies Aldarion on a voyage around the coast of Numenor and they attend a feast in Andunie. They argue and are briefly separated.

Aldarion becomes betrothed to Erendis.

Aldarion voyages to Middle-earth and finds Vinyalonde ruined again and the Men living near the coasts fearful or hostile to the Numenoreans. Aldarion first hears rumors of an Enemy at work in Middle-earth. A storm sweeps Aldarion's ships northward, delaying his return to Numenor.

Aldarion goes to Sea again, promising to return in two years but instead is gone for five years. He helps Gil-galad investigate the growing discord in Middle-earth. Gil-galad fears that a servant of Morgoth is rising to power and he sends a letter to Tar-Meneldur. Tar-Meneldur decides to surrender the Sceptre to his son Aldarion. Aldarion and his wife Erendis separate.

Tar-Aldarion becomes the sixth ruler of Numenor. In 883 or 884, he sails again to Middle-earth and may have met Galadriel at Tharbad around this time. Hallatan of Hyarastorni temporarily serves as Regent in Numenor.

Tar-Aldarion changes the law of succession, allowing females to become rulers of Numenor. His daughter Ancalime becomes his heir.

Sauron forges the One Ring in Mount Doom. Celebrimbor and the Elven-smiths become aware of him and realize they were deceived. Sauron uses the Ring to strengthen the foundations of Barad-dur.

Birth of Tar-Minastir's son Tar-Ciryatan in Numenor.

War of the Elves and Sauron begins. The Three Rings are hidden. Galadriel receives Nenya. Gil-galad receives Narya and Vilya. Cirdan may have received Narya from Gil-galad at this time, or he may have received it before the War of the Last Allianceat the end of the Second Age.

Sauron invades Eriador. Elrond leads a force to confront him. Gil-galad requests aid from Numenor. Tar-Minastir assembles a fleet but it is delayed.

Sauron's forces attack Eregion. Sauron kills Celebrimbor and seizes the Nine Rings and six of the Seven Rings. The Elves led by Celeborn and Elrond are overwhelmed and Eregion is destroyed. Durin III leads an attack from Khazad-dum to allow Elrond to escape. The Dwarves retreat and the Doors of Durin are shut. Elrond establishes the refuge of Rivendell. Some Noldor relocate to Lothlorien including - according to one story - Celeborn and Galadriel. Celeborn helps strengthen the defenses of Lothlorien.

Sauron overruns Eriador. Sauron's forces besiege Rivendell but are unable to capture it.

Cirdan and Gil-galad defend the Grey Havens against Sauron's forces. A fleet from Numenor led by Admiral Ciryatur arrives. Sauron is forced to retreat.

Sauron's forces are defeated in the Battle of the Gwathlo and he returns to Mordor. Elrond is appointed vice-regent to Gil-galad and Rivendell becomes the stronghold of the Elves in Eriador. Elrond may have received Vilya at this time. Celeborn and Galadriel may have been in Rivendell at this time.

Death of Tar-Telperien in Numenor. She has no children, so the Sceptre passes to her nephew Tar-Minastir, the eleventh ruler of Numenor. (Note: The date of Tar-Minastir's accession to the throne contradicts other accounts stating that he was King of Numenor during the War of the Elves and Sauron from 1693 to 1701.)

Birth of Tar-Ciryatan's son Tar-Atanamir in Numenor. Sauron extends his power eastward around this time. Also around this time, the Numenoreans begin to establish dominions on the coasts of Middle-earth.

Tar-Minastir is coerced against his will to surrender the Sceptre to his son Tar-Ciryatan, the twelfth ruler of Numenor. The Numenoreans begin to oppress the Men of Middle-earth during his reign.

Birth of Tar-Atanamir's son Tar-Ancalimon in Numenor.

Tar-Ciryatan surrenders the Sceptre to his son Tar-Atanamir, the thirteenth ruler of Numenor. Tar-Atanamir and others begin to speak openly against the Ban of the Valar and become resentful of the Valar and the Elves.

Birth of Tar-Ancalimon's son Tar-Telemmaite in Numenor.

Death of Tar-Atanamir, the first King of Numenor to refuse to surrender the Sceptre to his heir before he died. His son Tar-Ancalimon becomes the fourteenth ruler of Numenor. The Numenoreans become divided between the King's Men and the Faithful. First appearance of the Nazgul - three of whom were once Numenorean lords. (Note: The date 2251 is incorrectly given as the year of Tar-Atanamir's accession to the throne in early editions of The Lord of the Rings. In addition, "The Line of Elros" in Unfinished Tales gives 2221 as the year of Tar-Atanamir's death.)

Ar-Pharazon lands at Umbar with a great fleet.

Ar-Pharazon comes to Mordor and demands Sauron's surrender. Sauron submits to being taken to Numenor in hopes of bringing about their defeat by other means. In time he becomes a trusted counsellor of Ar-Pharazon and begins to corrupt him with the aid of the One Ring. In the years following, the Haradrim are enslaved and sacrificed by the Numenoreans.

Ar-Pharazon tries to conquer the Undying Lands. Eru causes the fleet to sink and Numenor is destroyed under the waves. The Faithful escape to Middle-earth led by Elendil, Isildur, and Anarion. Sauron's body is destroyed but his spirit escapes and is able to bring the One Ring back to Middle-earth.

Foundation of the realms of Gondor and Arnor. Sauron returns to Mordor. Orthanc, Osgiliath, Minas Anor, and Minas Ithil are built around this time or soon after. The seven palantiri are distributed throughout Gondor and Arnor.

The army of the Last Alliance gathers in Rivendell.

The army of the Last Alliance crosses the Misty Mountains. They are joined by forces from Lothlorien led by Amdir and from Greenwood led by Oropher and Dwarves from Khazad-dum. The Men of the Mountains break their oath to Isildur by refusing to join the war against Sauron around this time. Sauron destroys the land of the Entwives around this time to prevent the Last Alliance from using their crops.

War of the Last Alliance begins. Battle of Dagorlad. Amdir and half his force are killed. Amroth becomes King of Lothlorien. Oropher is killed. Thranduil becomes King of the Woodland Realm. Sauron's forces are defeated. Sauron is besieged in Barad-dur.

Anarion is killed during the Siege of Barad-dur.

Elendil and Gil-galad defeat Sauron but are themselves killed. Isildur takes the One Ring. Elrond and Cirdan counsel Isildur to destroy the One Ring, but he refuses. Sauron's spirit flees his body and hides in the East. Minas Ithil is reclaimed for Gondor. Around this time Treebeard goes in search of Fimbrethil but does not find her. End of the Second Age.


Third Age:

Isildur plants a seedling of the White Tree in Minas Anor. He leaves Anarion's son Meneldil in charge of Gondor and intends to live in Arnor and assume the High Kingship.

September 5: Isildur sets out for Arnor.

October 4: Isildur and his three elder sons Elendur, Aratan, and Ciryon are slain by Orcs in the Gladden Fields and the One Ring is lost in the waters. Meneldil becomes the third King of Gondor.

Isildur's esquire Ohtar brings the shards of Narsil to Arnor.

The Five Wizards - Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast, Alatar and Pallando - arrive in Middle-earth around this time. Gandalf receives Narya from Cirdan. The Blue Wizards travel to Rhun to try to free the Easterlings from Sauron's influence. Saruman accompanies them but soon returns to western Middle-earth.

The Haradrim besiege Umbar for the next 35 years. King Ciryandil of Gondor is killed in battle. Ciryaher (later called Hyarmendacil I) becomes the fifteenth King of Gondor.

Death of King Beleg of Arthedain. Mallor becomes third King of Arthedain.

Birth of Atanatar II's eldest son Narmacil I in Gondor.

Sauron returns from the East and secretly builds the stronghold of Dol Guldur in Greenwood. A shadow falls over the forest and it becomes known as Mirkwood. King Ciryaher of Gondor conquers the Haradrim and gains territory in the south. He takes the name Hyarmendacil I meaning "South-victor." Gondor reaches the height of its power. The Harfoot branch of Hobbits cross the Misty Mountains into Eriador.

Marhari's son Marhwini leads a group of survivors to live in the Vales of the Anduin between the Gladden and the Carrock. They become the Eotheod. The eight Nazgul (apart from the Lord of the Nazgul) may have returned to Mordor around this time.

The Wainriders and their allies Khand and Near Harad march to war against Gondor on two fronts.

July 9: News of approaching enemy forces from the southeast reaches Pelargir. Earnil and the Southern Army are already in position to meet them at the Poros.

July 12-13: Ondoher learns of an army approaching from the northeast. The Northern Army of Gondor and the Eotheod are taken by surprise before the Black Gate by an enemy army lurking in the shadow of the Ash Mountains. King Ondoher of Gondor and his sons Artamir and Faramir (I) are killed. Minohtar forms a rearguard to cover the retreat of Gondor's forces. Minohtar is killed late in the day on July 13 and Gondor's forces are routed. The Wainriders make camp that night. Earnil and the Southern Army take the Wainriders by surprise and defeat them in the Battle of the Camp.

After the defeat and the loss of the King and his heirs, Arvedui of the North-kingdom tries to claim the crown of Gondor, but his claim is rejected. The Steward Pelendur temporarily rules Gondor.

Winter: The Witch-king invades Arthedain and captures Fornost. The North-kingdom ends. King Arvedui's sons and many other Dunedain retreat to Lindon. King Arvedui holds out in the North Downs and then retreats north to the Icebay of Forochel.

March: Cirdan sends a ship to rescue King Arvedui of Arthedain but the ship is wrecked in a storm in the Icebay of Forochel. Arvedui and all aboard perish. The Stone of Amon Sul and the Stone of Annuminas are lost in the Sea.

A fleet arrives at the Grey Havens from Gondor led by Earnur. The Witch-king's forces are defeated at the Battle of Fornost by the Dunedain of the North, Men of Gondor, Elves of Lindon and Rivendell, and Hobbit archers from the Shire. Earnur tries to confront the Witch-king. The Witch-king leaves the North. Glorfindel speaks a prophecy concerning his doom.

Arvedui's son Aranarth takes the title of Chieftain of the Dunedain. The Dunedain of the North become a wandering people. The heirlooms of the House of Isildur are kept at Rivendell. The Elendil Stone remains in Elostirion under the care of Cirdan and the Elves of Lindon.

Frumgar leads the Eotheod north to a new land at the source of the Anduin.

Bucca of the Marish becomes the first Thain of the Shire in the absence of a King.

The Lord of the Nazgul comes to Mordor and gathers the other Nazgul to him to prepare for Sauron's return. The Balrog awakes in Khazad-dum and kills King Durin VI. Nain I becomes King of Durin's Folk.

The Balrog kills King Nain I and the Dwarves flee Khazad-dum. Thrain I becomes King of Durin's Folk. Many Silvan Elves flee Lothlorien, including Nimrodel. King Amroth of Lothlorien follows Nimrodel and agrees to take her to the Undying Lands. They become separated on the way to Edhellond. The last Elves of Edhellond sail to the Undying Lands. Amroth's ship is swept out to Sea and he drowns trying to return to Nimrodel. Nimrodel's fate is unknown. Her companion Mithrellas marries Imrazor of Belfalas and from them are descended the Princes of Dol Amroth. Celeborn and Galadriel become Lord and Lady of Lothlorien.

It is feared that Sauron has arisen again and is inhabiting Dol Guldur in Mirkwood. Mardil, Steward of Gondor introduces a new calendar system called the Stewards' Reckoning.
